. Using the scanner and digital camera

A. Scanner and Digital Camera vocabulary

1.      RGB– Red Green Blue color mode. The common standard colors used in a monitor.

2.      Image resolution – the number of pixels that compose the height and width of the digital image.

3.      Image size – the actual file size of the image, usually measured in Megabytes (Mb).

4.      Luminosity – a measure of brightness.

5.      Hue – the color value given to a pixel.

6.      DPI – dots per inch (number of pixels per square inch). A measurement for resolution.

7.      Half toning – a process by which shades of clustering dots together in a pattern creates a screened look.

8.      CMYK – Cyan Magenta Yellow Black. The common standards used in ink printers.

9.      Contrast – a measurement of the range between the darkest and lightest pixels.

10.      Gamma adjustment – adjustment that affects the brightness.

11.      USB (Universal Serial Bus) – Universal Serial Bus. A personal computer external bus standard, which can support up to 127 peripheral devices in a daisy chain configuration, can support plug-and-play (hot plugging), and has a total bandwidth of 1.5 megabytes per second. It uses inexpensive cable, which can be up to 5 meters long.

12.      Parallel Port – a socket of a computer for transmitting data in parallel, which means more than one bit at a time. There may be either, 16, or 36 channels; each channel carries one bit of information, so eight channels would be used to transmit 1 eight-bit byte at a time. Not all the channels are used for data; some are used for control signals. A parallel port, also called the female connector, has 25 holes, and the cable that plugs into it has 25 pins.

 13.      SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) – (Pronounced “skuzzy”.) A High-speed interface that can connect to a computer device suck as hard drives, CD-ROM drives, floppy drives, tape drives, scanners, and printers. SCSI can connect up to seven devices; each one is given an identification number from 0 to 7, which is set with a manual switch.

14.      TWAIN – Technology Without An Interesting Name. An open standard interface that makes it possible to capture image data from a scanner or other input devices while using a graphics application (such as Fireworks). Most scanners have a TWAIN driver.

15.      Firewire port (IEEE 1394)- The former name for High Performance Serial Bus. The High Performance Serial Bus can connect up to 63 devices in a tree-like daisy chain configuration, and transmit data at up to 400 megabits per second. It supports plug and play and peer-to-peep communication between peripheral devices.
